Frequently Asked Questions about the Boogie

What if my questions are not answered here?
Please search for your answers here first! If we haven't addressed your question, please write to

When are the dances and how can I confirm they're happening?
The dances are held every 2nd and 4th Saturday, with the exception of July and August, when we tend to only have one dance a month (dates to be determined closer to the date). For up-to-date information, see our website http://www.barefootboogie.org, or sign-up for our email bulletins.

How can I be added to the e-Mailing List?
You can add yourself to our email Events Mailing List! To do this, please go to our Mailing List page. There's a verification process for this that you can only complete personally.

Where are the dances held?
Insight Meditation at 28 W. 27th Street, between 6th Ave and Broadway, 10th Floor.

Who may attend?
We're always open to everyone!

Can kids attend?
You are welcome to bring your children. Kids under 12 dance FREE. Children are welcome to bring their playful energy to the floor. Please be aware: Parents are responsible for their children's safety and for ensuring that their children dance safely amongst other dancers! Please ensure that your children stay away from wires and speaker stands, and that they keep a safe distance from other dancers who might not see them.

How about the differently abled?
People of all ages and all abilities are welcome!

How can I volunteer?
If you want to help with set-up or take-down, please send an email to info@barefootboogie.org to let us know in advance, or just show up!  If you'd like to help with set-up, please come at 7:30 p.m.  For door shifts, sign up when you arrive.  To DJ, contact dj-coordinator@barefootboogie.org. Our dances are run completely by volunteers, so please talk to any of our organizers if you want to participate in making the dance happen!

Are door shifts arranged in advance?
All you have to do is show up and sign up! You get $5 off your admission for doing a 1/2 hour door shift, and a free dance for doing 2 door shifts.

Do I have to be barefoot? Can I wear socks or dance shoes?
Most people dance barefoot at the Boogie, but many people wear socks or stockings. If you need to wear shoes for orthopedic reasons, you may wear special shoes with suede bottoms, dance sneakers, or soft shoes, as long as they were not also worn outside. There are no street shoes allowed in the meditation center.

What kind of music do you play?
Every DJ and every dance is different. Each of our DJs has his or her own style, and sometimes we have live music which brings another flavor to the Boogie. Our email announcements generally give a description of each DJ's style.  We invite you to try the dance out on different nights and experience the music!

Do you happen to know of any dances in my area? If there is nothing already here, we would consider starting a dance here because it is so valuable and important. Any ideas?
Check out our parent organization's site, Dance New England. They have dance listings nationally and internationally and may be able to help you. If all else fails, start your own Boogie! Check-out www.meetup.com, or Craig's List to find like-minded dancers!
